Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This safety directive requires owners and operators of specific Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante aircraft to modify the rudder hinge fitting on the tail (vertical stabiliser) to prevent dangerous corrosion.

Who it affects: Only applies to aircraft with serial numbers 110001 to 110141, 110143 to 110146, 110148, and 110149.

What must be done: Operators must carry out the modification described in Embraer Service Bulletin No. 110-55-009. This changes how the central hinge fitting of the rudder is constructed or sealed to stop water from pooling inside it.

Why it matters: Water collecting in the rudder hinge fitting can cause corrosion (rust), which could weaken the tail structure and potentially lead to loss of control of the aircraft.

When: The work had to be completed by 30 September 1981, or within 250 hours of flight time after this directive was issued (whichever came first), unless already done.
