What it does
AD/ELECT/74 Amendment 1 is a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) airworthiness directive that imposes a mandatory inspection and corrective action regime on a defined population of Lermer GmbH water boilers installed in specified Airbus aeroplanes. The directive does not impose a new requirement; it corrects a typographical error in the reference to the original French Directive Générale de l’Aviation Civile (DGAC) AD F-2004-132 in Note 2 of the original AD/ELECT/74 issued on 5 August 2004. The technical requirements, the list of affected part numbers and type numbers, the compliance actions, and the compliance date (31 December 2004) remain unchanged from the original directive. The effective date of the amendment is 5 May 2014, meaning that from that date the corrected reference is the operative version for enforcement purposes, even though the underlying action date remains historical.
The requirement itself is a three-stage conditional process. First, the operator or maintainer must gain access to the water boiler in accordance with the applicable aircraft maintenance manual and identify the water boiler by its part number or type number. The affected identifiers are Lermer Part Numbers L13471, L13471-05, L13471-11, L13471-19, and Type Numbers 1010099-6, 1010099-10, 1010099-6.1, 1010099-6.2. Water boilers that already bear an engraving of one of the listed Airbus Service Bulletin numbers (A300-25A0474, A310-25A2146, A300-25A6170, A320-25A1299, A330-25A3174, A340-25A4192) or the words ‘Complies with AD F-2004-132’ are excluded from the scope, meaning they are conclusively presumed compliant. Second, if the water boiler is within scope, the logo on the identification plate at the rear must be checked. If the new DRIESSEN logo is present, no further action is required. If the old Lermer logo is present, the overheat protection must be inspected in accordance with Lermer GmbH Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) 25-30-31 page block 300. Third, the number of electrical terminals connected to the overheat protection must be determined. If four or more terminals are connected, the water boiler is airworthy and must be engraved adjacent to the equipment label with the words ‘Complies with AD F-2004-132’. If fewer than four terminals are connected, the water boiler must be scrapped and replaced with an airworthy unit. For Airbus aeroplanes, embodiment of the applicable Airbus Service Bulletin (A300-25A0474, A310-25A2146, A300-25A6170, A320-25A1299, A330-25A3174, or A340-25A4192) is explicitly recognised as an acceptable means of compliance for the entire requirement.
