What it does
This directive (AD/ECUREUIL/78 Amendment 2) establishes mandatory inspection and operational restrictions for Eurocopter AS 350 (Ecureuil) series helicopters with sliding doors, as set out in the document text. Mechanically, it requires an initial dimensional check of the sliding door aft roller diameter and the front end opening of the middle rail, performed in accordance with paragraph 2.B.1 of Eurocopter AS 350 Alert Service Bulletin No. 05.00.41 Revision 2.2. The outcome of that check is then used to apply the actions specified in paragraph 2.B.2 of that Requirement document. The directive sets quantitative pass/fail criteria: if criterion C1 (roller diameter difference) is equal to or greater than 5 mm and criterion C2 (front-end opening dimension) is equal to or greater than 1.5 mm, door operation in flight is allowed; if C1 is less than 5 mm and/or C2 is less than 1.5 mm, door operation in flight is prohibited. Where door operation in flight is prohibited, a placard stating the restriction must be affixed to the instrument panel.
Compliance timing is explicit: the checks must be performed before further flight after 3 July 2002, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 100 flight hours. The directive records its effective date as 26 October 2006 and bears the signature of David Villiers, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 13 September 2006. The amendment limits applicability to unmodified aircraft by reference to MOD 073287, MOD 073290, and Eurocopter Service Bulletin No. 52.00.29: aircraft that have those modifications or the service bulletin incorporated are excluded from applicability. The directive explicitly references EASA AD 2006-0249 and Eurocopter technical documents as the Requirement sources and background.
