What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/ECUREUIL/70 Amdt 1, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate, requires inspection and removal of specified main and tail servocontrols fitted to Eurocopter AS 350 (Ecureuil) series helicopters. The instrument is issued under subregulation 39.1(1) of CASR 1998 (front matter). It applies to all AS 350 helicopters, versions B, BA, B1, B2, B3, BB and D, fitted with servocontrols identified by the part numbers and serial numbers listed in Table 1 and Table 2 of the Directive (Applicability). The Directive identifies a manufacturing defect detected in a batch of rods of the main servocontrol and states that rod failure would lead to loss of control of the helicopter (Background).
Mechanically, the AD imposes four actions. First, operators must check whether any servocontrols listed in Table 1 and Table 2 are installed (Requirement 1). Second, servocontrols listed in Table 1 must be replaced with servocontrols not listed in Table 1 or Table 2 (Requirement 2). Third, servocontrols listed in Table 2 must be replaced with servocontrols not listed in Table 1 or Table 2 (Requirement 3). Fourth, no servocontrols listed in Table 1 or Table 2 may be installed on the aircraft from the effective date of the Directive (Requirement 4). The AD also records that servocontrols reconditioned by TRW-SAMM are identified by a letter V engraved to the right of the part number on the identification plate, and the tables list part numbers without that suffix (Note 1).
Compliance timings are explicit: the checks and replacement of Table 1 servocontrols must be actioned before further flight (Compliance items 1 and 2); replacement of Table 2 servocontrols must occur within 550 flight hours or 24 months, whichever comes first, after the effective date (Compliance item 3); and the prohibition on installing listed servocontrols has immediate effect from the Directive's effective date (Compliance item 4). This Amendment became effective on 9 May 2003; the original AD first became effective on 3 December 2001 (effective dates and Background). The Directive also makes a formal reference to DGAC AD 2003-099(A) (Note 2).
