Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this does: This airworthiness directive (a mandatory safety order) requires owners of specific Eurocopter AS 350 helicopters to modify their cargo hook systems to prevent accidental release of loads.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of AS 350 helicopters fitted with cargo hooks using the Siren S1609-5 release unit (part number 704A41-811-017).

What must be done: The cargo hook assembly must be modified according to the manufacturer's Service Bulletin No. 25.31. This involves adding a spring unit to the electrical release mechanism.

Why it matters: Without this modification, the cargo hook could open accidentally during flight, dropping suspended loads and creating serious safety hazards for people and property below.

Compliance deadline: The modification had to be completed by 31 December 1987.
