What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/ECUREUIL/108 (2/2005 TX), imposes immediate inspection and remedial duties on operators of certain Eurocopter AS 350 B3 helicopters fitted with specified GOODRICH tail servo-control units. Mechanically, the Directive does four things.
First, it prohibits intentional autorotation flight until a specified inspection is carried out, see Requirement 1. Second, it mandates an inspection and associated checks of in‑service tail servo‑controls in accordance with Alert Telex (AT) Eurocopter AS 350 No 67.00.30 or a later DGAC approved revision, see Requirement 2 and its subparagraphs distinguishing helicopters fitted and not fitted with Automatic Flight Control System. Third, it requires removal from service of any servo‑control found non‑compliant by the bench check in accordance with paragraph 2.B.6 of the AT, and installation of a compliant unit in accordance with paragraph 2.B.2 of the AT, see Requirement 3. Fourth, it requires bench checking of spare tail servo‑controls before installation on a rotorcraft, see Requirement 4.
The AD is limited in scope by its applicability clause. It applies to AS 350 B3 helicopters fitted with GOODRICH tail servo‑control P/N SC5071‑XX or SC5072, except for three categories: SC5072 units with serial number equal to or above 1372, units overhauled or repaired in compliance with Service Bulletin GOODRICH No. SC507X‑67‑39‑01‑3, and units never removed since delivery of a new rotorcraft. The Directive became effective on 7 January 2005 and the delegate signature on the instrument is dated 6 January 2005.
The Directive explicitly refers to the DGAC Airworthiness Form AF UF‑2004‑196 and notes EASA approval 2004‑12557. The background statement sets out the technical safety concern: servos fitted with an incorrect servo piston could cause a loss of tail rotor control authority during certain phases of autorotative flight. The Directive’s operational effect is to prevent intentional autorotation training or operations until the prescribed inspections and any necessary replacements are completed.
