What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) titled AD/EC 225/8, dated 11/2008, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and signed by David Villiers on 27 August 2008. It applies to Eurocopter EC 225 LP helicopters, all serial numbers. Mechanically, the AD directs operators and maintenance organisations to carry out specified inspections and follow-up actions on the Main Gearbox (MGB) suspension bar attach fittings and associated structure.
The AD requires the following, in accordance with the referenced manufacturer document (Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin No. 05A002 Revision 1 or a later approved revision):
- check the tightening torque of the bolts that secure the front MGB bar attaching fitting (instructions in paragraph 2.B of the service bulletin);
- check the tightening torque of the bolts that secure the front MGB bar attaching fitting and the rear right-hand (RH) and left-hand (LH) MGB bar attach fittings (paragraph 2.B);
- interpret the inspection results using the acceptance/assessment criteria specified in paragraph 2.B.3 of the service bulletin;
- after interpretation, carry out readjustment of bolt tightening torque and inspection for cracks in attach fitting bolts and frames 3855 and 5295 as specified in paragraphs 2.B.4 and 2.B.5 of the service bulletin.
Compliance timing is prescribed as: perform the initial actions at the next scheduled 750-hour inspection but not exceeding 825 flight hours, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 825 flight hours. The AD becomes effective on 23 October 2008. The AD also notes a reference to EASA AD 2006-0163 Revision 1, dated 13 December 2007.
The AD thereby converts the remedial procedures and criteria contained in the Eurocopter service bulletin into a regulatory requirement for all EC 225 LP helicopters registered under CASA’s remit (the text provided). Operators must obtain and apply the specified service bulletin paragraphs, or an approved later revision, to meet the AD’s obligations.
