What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD/EC 225/3) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 25 August 2008, effective from 29 August 2008. It imposes four distinct requirements on operators and maintainers of Eurocopter EC 225 LP helicopters equipped with main rotor blade de-icing harnesses bearing part number 42994. The directive addresses a specific failure mode: untimely disconnection of the de-icing harness connector at the slip-ring assembly side.
Mechanically, the AD compels operators to perform a sequence of inspection and modification actions. Requirement 1 mandates a check for correct tightness of the five main rotor blade de-icing harness connectors on the slip-ring assembly side, to be carried out before each flight from the effective date until compliance with Requirement 2 is achieved. Requirement 2 is a one-time action within the next 50 hours time in service (TIS) or three months, whichever occurs first, for helicopters that have not previously complied with European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) 2007-0012-E. It involves checking that the locking system operates correctly and fitting each connector with a heat-shrinkable sleeve, per the accomplishment instructions of Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 05A006 dated 21 December 2006.
Requirement 3 establishes a recurring inspection regime: within the next 85 hours TIS after initial compliance with Requirement 2 or the equivalent paragraph of EASA EAD 2007-0012-E, and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 85 hours TIS, the operator must check tightness of the same five connectors. Requirement 4 is a recurring condition-based duty: each time a main rotor blade de-icing harness connector is disconnected and reconnected for any reason, a heat-shrinkable sleeve must be installed. Later revisions of ASB 05A006 approved by EASA are acceptable for compliance.
