What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/DHC-8/84) mandates inspection, testing and conditional replacement of angle of attack (AOA) sensors, Part Number 861CAB, on specified Bombardier (Boeing Canada/de Havilland) DHC-8 aeroplanes (Models 301, 311, 314 and 315, Serial Numbers 100-583 inclusive). The AD requires an initial determination of whether MOD ‘J’ has been incorporated in both right and left AOA sensors (Requirement 1). Where MOD ‘J’ is absent on an AOA sensor, the AD requires an AOA sensor vane movement test using a gram gauge in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Bombardier Alert Service Bulletin A8-27-94 dated 25 October 2001 (Requirement 2). The AD sets gram-gauge thresholds and corresponding actions: readings less than 110 grams require no replacement; readings between 110 and 170 grams require replacement of the AOA sensor (Requirement 4); initial readings exceeding 170 grams require replacement of the AOA vane (Requirement 3). A repeat test regime applies to sensors that are non-Mod ‘J’ and not replaced on first test (Requirement 5), with replacement actions on the repeat test based on the same gram-gauge ranges, although the wording for replacement on repeat tests specifies replacing the AOA sensor for readings exceeding 170 grams (Requirement 6) and for readings between 110 and 170 grams (Requirement 7). The AD also prohibits the installation of pre‑Mod ‘J’ AOA sensors (P/N 861CAB) on any aircraft as of the effective date (Requirement 8 and Compliance). The AD is issued under subregulation 39.1(1) of CAR 1998 and becomes effective on 21 February 2002. The AD cross-references Transport Canada CF-2001-46 and requires compliance with the Bombardier ASB referenced for test procedures and replacement instructions.
