What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/DHC-8/133 Amdt 2 (effective 9 March 2009), mandates inspections, reporting, maintenance-schedule changes and a design modification for Bombardier Inc. DHC-8 Series 400 aeroplanes (Models 400, 401, 402) with specific serial numbers (4001, 4003, 4004, 4006, and 4008 through 4208). The directive addresses the main landing gear system and, in particular, the main landing gear retract actuator and associated jam nut, pistons and hardware.
Mechanically, the AD requires:
- Requirement 1: a one-off general visual inspection of the main landing gear system in accordance with Bombardier DHC‑8 Series 400 Maintenance Requirements Manual (PSM 1-84-7) tasks Z700-03E and Z700-04E, and rectification of any discrepancy found (applicable to serial numbers 4001, 4003, 4004, 4006 and 4008 through 4182).
- Requirement 2: general visual inspection and repetitive checks of the retract actuator jam nut and wire lock on left and right main landing gear (applicable to serial numbers 4001, 4003, 4004, 4006 and 4008 through 4208): 2a is an immediate inspection; 2b imposes repeat intervals not to exceed 250 landings or one month, whichever occurs first.
- Requirement 3: a detailed visual inspection of the retract actuator per Bombardier Repair Drawing (RD) 8/4-32-059 Issue 5 (or later), with repeats at intervals not to exceed 2,000 landings or one calendar year (applicable to serial numbers 4001, 4003, 4004, 4006 and 4008 through 4182). The compliance timing for the initial detailed inspection is staged according to existing accumulated landings or time-in-service for specific actuator part numbers (p/n 46550-7, -9, -11).
- A limited deferral: if earlier inspections of the piston (p/n 46570-1/-3) threads and relief area were done without borescope or 10X magnification, a one-time deferral of up to 500 landings is permissible to complete the inspection using borescope or 10X magnification mirror.
