Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this is: This is an aviation safety directive (called an Airworthiness Directive or AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority that mandates a specific mechanical inspection for certain aircraft.

What it requires: Owners and operators of De Havilland DHC-6 "Twin Otter" aeroplanes with serial numbers 1 through 230 must inspect the rivets that attach the lower wing skin to the wing spar (the main structural beam of the wing).

Why it matters: This inspection prevents potential structural failures that could compromise flight safety. The directive references a manufacturer service bulletin indicating potential defects in these specific fasteners.

Who must comply: Anyone operating the affected aircraft models within Australian jurisdiction.

Deadline: The inspection must be completed within 100 hours of flight time accumulated after 31 January 1977.

Reference: Operators must follow the inspection procedures outlined in De Havilland of Canada Service Bulletin No. 6/351.
