Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

This mandatory Airworthiness Directive applies to owners and operators of De Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk aeroplanes built in England. It addresses broken wing-flap control cables that can cause dangerous flap asymmetry and loss of control during landing.

You must follow British Aerospace Technical News Sheet No.184 Issue 2 for repair and inspection. Initial compliance is within 50 flight hours after 25 April 1995 (unless done in the prior 12 months); repeat inspections are required every 12 months or every 150 flight hours, whichever comes first.

AD/DHC-1/36 Flap Operating Cables 6/95 DM

Applicability: British Aerospace C1 (English production) aircraft.

Requirement: Action in accordance with British Aerospace TNS CT(C1) No.184 Issue 2.

Note: UK CAA AD 001-03-95 refers

Compliance: Unless already accomplished in the preceding twelve months, within 50 hours time in service after 25 April 1995; thereafter at intervals not exceeding twelve months, or 150 hours time in service, whichever occurs first.

Background: Cases have been reported of failure of the Flap operating cable which in one case led to a flap asymmetry situation during the final phase of landing. Investigation has shown the failures were due to either incorrect rigging of the control cables or inadequate maintenance of the control pulleys.
