What it does
This instrument is Airworthiness Directive AD/DHC-1/33 Amdt 2, addressing tailplane support struts for De Havilland DHC-1 (Chipmunk) series aeroplanes. The directive requires operators to carry out the actions set out in British Aerospace Mandatory TNS CT(C1) 186 issue 2 for affected tailplane support struts. The AD identifies the applicable production models as English production (C1), all models, and Portuguese production T Mk 20 models. It states that the inspection and corrective actions required under the BAe TNS must be completed either within three months after the effective date of this AD or prior to issue of a Certificate of Airworthiness, whichever occurs first, unless the actions were already completed under the initial issue and a BAe radiographic acceptable assessment from that inspection is held. The AD mandates repeat inspections at periods not exceeding seven years after either the installation of new struts or compliance with the initial issue or this amendment. The AD explicitly applies to struts held as spares and names the relevant part number for checking applicability, P/N C1-T-5A. The document records that the amendment becomes effective on 22 June 2011 and is issued under the name of Glen Steemson, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, dated 16 June 2011. The background text in the AD records that a case of internal corrosion in a tailplane attachment strut was reported; the initial issue required external visual inspection, rework and non-destructive inspection. Amendment 1 introduced a repeat inspection and revised the technical requirements via the TNS. This Amendment 2 extends applicability to Portuguese manufactured T Mk 20 models, clarifies compliance wording, and leaves the inspection interval unchanged. The AD instructs operators to check the tailplane support strut part number to determine applicability and to contact the manufacturer or type certificate holder where doubt exists.
