What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) addressing cracking in the main undercarriage leg mounting casting in each wing of De Havilland DHC-1 (Chipmunk) aeroplanes. The AD sets a mandatory inspection requirement: operators must "Inspect in accordance with British Aerospace Technical News Sheet CT (C1) No. 165 Issue 7, dated 1 June 2010 or later revision approved by the UK CAA" (Requirement). The AD clarifies applicability to English production (C1), all models, and adds Portuguese production (T Mk 20) models (Applicability). It also records that wings modified in accordance with De Havilland Mod H.310 "may not need further inspection per this AD" and instructs operators to consult the requirement document and contact the type certificate (TC) holder if there is doubt about whether the modification has removed the need for continuing inspections (Requirement).
The AD makes compliance contingent on following the inspection intervals and limits as specified in the Technical News Sheet (Compliance). It explicitly records that prior compliance with the Directive at Amendment 8 constitutes compliance with this Amendment (Compliance). The instrument becomes effective on 23 June 2011 (Compliance). The background material states the technical problem as "Numerous cases of cracking have been documented in the main undercarriage leg mounting casting in each wing" and attributes the cracks to "stress corrosion which is related primarily to elapsed calendar time rather than flight hours" (Background).
Mechanically the AD does not change inspection technique or intervals from the previous amendment; Amendment 10 modifies only applicability by adding the Portuguese-manufactured T Mk 20 to the set of aircraft covered (Background). The AD cross-refers to UK regulatory material, noting "Note 1: UK CAA AD 2807 refers" and requires use of the specified British Aerospace Technical News Sheet or later UK CAA-approved revisions (Requirement; Note). The AD is issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, signed by the delegate, Glen Steemson, and is dated 17 June 2011 (signature block).
