What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/DAUPHIN/89) addresses a specific structural and installation risk on Eurocopter SA 360 and SA 365 (Dauphin series) helicopters where a main rotor head (MRH) fitted with frequency adapters and frequency adapter bushes is installed. The Directive distinguishes two populations of MRHs: those fitted pre‑MOD 0762C39 and those fitted post‑MOD 0762C39, and prescribes different mandatory actions for each (see Applicability and Requirement). For pre‑MOD MRHs operated in hot climatic conditions and/or tropical and damp atmosphere the AD mandates modification of the frequency adapters and bushes in accordance with MOD 0762C39 and specified paragraphs of Eurocopter ASBs (AS 365 ASB No. 62.00.24 and SA 365 ASB No. 65.45). For post‑MOD MRHs the AD mandates recurrent inspections: check that the lockwire is in place and that the holes in the frequency adapters and bushes are not blocked, with remedial steps required before further flight if defects are found (Requirement).
The AD sets binding timeframes. Initial compliance for the modification requirement must occur within 110 flight hours after 2 December 2006, and the inspection requirement for post‑MOD MRHs must be accomplished within 10 flight hours after application of MOD 0762C39 or within 10 flight hours after 2 December 2006, whichever is later, and then at intervals not to exceed 10 flight hours thereafter (Compliance). The Directive also imposes a prohibition on installing certain spare items intended for use in hot or tropical/damp atmospheres unless they have been modified as required by the relevant ASB paragraphs (Requirement, final paragraph). The AD became effective on 2 December 2006 and is issued under the authority of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) delegate, with the text referencing the related EASA Emergency AD 2006‑0362‑E (Background; note in Requirement).
