What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/DAUPHIN/88) requires modification of the engine control selector switch guards on certain Eurocopter Dauphin series helicopters and prohibits the installation of specific selector switch guard part numbers. The directive is framed as a safety action "to prevent the engine control selector flipping from FLT to IDLE during flight" and requires "the installation of new selector lifting interlocks with locking detents" (Background). The operative requirements are twofold.
First, Requirement 1 orders operators to "Replace the engine control switch guards on panel 12 ALPHA" and prescribes the method of replacement by reference to Eurocopter AS 365 Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) 76.00.08, or a later EASA-approved revision. The ASB paragraphs to be followed differ depending on the helicopter's modification status: for helicopters "not modified per MOD 0739B86" the operator must comply with ASB paragraphs 2.B.1, 2.B.2, 2.B.3, 2.B.4 and 2.B.5; for helicopters "not modified per MOD 0739C36" the operator must comply with ASB paragraphs 2.B.1, 2.B.3 and 2.B.5 (Requirement 1, sub‑paragraphs a and b). The directive ties the method of compliance to the manufacturer's alert service bulletin and to the regulator EASA for later approved revisions.
Second, Requirement 2 creates a ban on certain selector switch guards. It states that selector switch guards (selector lifting interlocks) with the listed part numbers "may not be installed either as an initial installation or as a replacement spare." The forbidden part numbers are 800KU01B6AA, 800KU01D6AA, 801KU01C6AA and 801KU01E6AA (Requirement 2).
The directive sets time limits for compliance. For Requirement 1 the deadline is "No later than 550 hours time in service, after the effective date of this Directive, or 26 October 2007, whichever occurs first." For Requirement 2 the deadline is "After the Requirement 1 modification has been accomplished or 26 October 2007, whichever occurs first." The directive becomes effective on 26 October 2006. The applicability statement limits the directive to "AS 365 N3 helicopters without MOD 0739C36" and Note 1 clarifies inclusion of helicopters with MOD 0739B86 embodied in accordance with Eurocopter Service Bulletin 76.00.06 or during customisation, listing serial numbers modified during customisation.
