What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD), AD/DAUPHIN/72 Amdt 1 (4/2006), directed at Eurocopter Dauphin-series helicopters and signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on 21 February 2006, with the amendment becoming effective on 13 April 2006. Mechanically, it imposes mandatory maintenance actions concerning the attachment clamps used to secure hydraulic pipes on specified Eurocopter models. The AD (a) requires replacement of attachment clamps with clamps compliant with Eurocopter Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) No. 29.00.08 dated 15 November 2005 (or later DGAC‑approved revisions) for certain helicopters, (b) prohibits installation of clamps that have silicone protection on hydraulic pipes, and (c) requires inspection of the left-hand hydraulic power-system attachment clamps and corrective action for other helicopters listed. The applicable helicopter types are Eurocopter Model SA 365 N and N1, and AS 365 N2 and N3 helicopters that are not modified per Mod 0729B67.
The AD sets differentiated obligations by aircraft delivery date. For AS 365 N2 and N3 helicopters delivered after 1 January 1998, operators must replace attachment clamps in accordance with ASB para 2.B.4 and must not install clamps with silicone protection (Requirement paras 1-2). For AS 365 N2 and N3 helicopters delivered prior to 1 January 1998 and for SA 365 N and N1 helicopters, the AD requires inspection of the attachment clamps on the left-hand hydraulic power system following ASB para 2.B.5, corrective action where necessary, and the same prohibition on silicone-protected clamps (Requirement paras 3-4).
The AD prescribes compliance timeframes. Replacement for post-1998 AS 365 N2/N3 helicopters must occur within 50 flying hours or one month after the AD takes effect, whichever occurs first (Compliance para 1). The prohibition on installing silicone-protected clamps takes effect immediately from the AD effective date (Compliance paras 2 and 4). The inspection requirement for earlier-delivered helicopters must be carried out within 660 flying hours or 26 months after the AD effective date, whichever occurs first (Compliance para 3). The AD expressly references the DGAC AD UF-2006-042 (approved by EASA under reference 2006-0042-E dated 10 February 2006) and notes that this supersedes DGAC ADF-2004-115 (Requirement note). The background describes the causal chain that prompted the AD: damage to silicone protection on a clamp due to hydraulic fluid exposure, chafing and then perforation of a hydraulic pressure pipe, discovered after an in-flight hydraulic warning illumination on an EC 155 B1 (Background).
