Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) — a mandatory safety order issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority under the Civil Aviation Regulations.

What it does It requires owners and operators of specific Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters (models SA 360C, SA 361, and SA 365C variants) to inspect and fix a dangerous defect in the main gearbox support bar shackle — a metal fitting that helps hold the gearbox (which transfers power from the engine to the rotors) in place.

Why it matters A cracked shackle was discovered on one helicopter. If left unaddressed, the shackle could fail, potentially causing the main gearbox to detach in flight and leading to catastrophic loss of control.

What must be done Follow the manufacturer's instructions in Aerospatiale Service Telex 01-27 and complete the required action within 10 hours of flight time after 13 July 1990.
