Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

What this does: This is a mandatory safety rule (called an Airworthiness Directive) that sets an expiry date — a "retirement life" — for specific helicopter parts.

Who it affects: Operators of certain Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters (models SA365C, SA365C1, SA365C2, and SA365C3).

The requirement: Owners must replace the flexible coupling discs located at the input end of the main gearbox (MGB) once they reach a specific age or number of flight hours. The exact retirement limits are found in the manufacturer's Service Bulletin No. 01.12, which is incorporated by reference.

Why it matters: Several of these coupling discs have developed cracks during normal use. To prevent catastrophic failure, the manufacturer reduced the allowed service life of these parts. This directive makes that reduction legally binding for all Australian operators of these aircraft.
