What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), numbered AD/DA42/6 and dated 10/2008 DM, requires that the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) for Diamond DA 42 and DA 42 M aeroplanes be amended to incorporate a Temporary Revision, TR‑MÄM‑42‑270 dated 31 May 2008, which contains new procedures to be followed in the event of a lightning strike (Requirement; TR reference). The AD applies to all serial numbers of DA 42 and DA 42 M aircraft (Applicability). It becomes effective on 8 August 2008 and requires compliance within 30 days after that effective date (Compliance; Effective date).
Mechanically, the AD creates an immediate, mandatory duty on operators or persons responsible for an aircraft’s AFM to insert the specified Temporary Revision into the AFM, unless the TR has already been incorporated. The TR may be removed from the AFM only when the AFM is amended by a normal revision that includes or supersedes TR‑MÄM‑42‑270 (Requirement, removal provision). The AD also records two operational/maintenance notes: after any lightning strike the aircraft should be inspected in accordance with the DA 42 Aircraft Maintenance Manual, Chapter 05‑50, paragraph 5.D (Note 1), and the AD refers operators to EASA AD 2008‑0136 (Note 2).
The AD records that the background problem prompting the directive was lightning strikes that exceeded design‑level exposure and produced structural damage that might not be visible to the pilot. To address that risk the manufacturer developed the TR procedures, which include an airspeed limitation and other measures to avoid additional loads to the structure (Background). The AD is signed by James Coyne, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (signature block, 24 July 2008).
All requirements and temporal limits in this summary are drawn from the text of the Directive itself: Applicability, Requirement, Notes, Compliance, Background and signature lines.
