What it does
Mechanically, the directive requires installation of an additional bracket on the propeller control/propeller system check valve assembly on Diamond Aircraft Industries DA42 aeroplanes in the specified serial-number range. The operative text, under "Requirement", states: "Unless already accomplished, modify the aircraft by installing the additional bracket in accordance with the instructions of Diamond Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) 42-024/3 dated 19 September 2006 or later NAA approved revisions." The compliance window is explicit: the modification must be completed "Within one month or within the next 50 flight hours after the effective date of this directive, whichever occurs first." The AD becomes effective on 10 May 2007, and is signed by Charles Lenarcic, Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (dated 27 March 2007).
The official rationale appears in the "Background" paragraph. It records that, after an engine change, an aluminium fitting attached to the engine gearbox that holds lines and fittings of the propeller control system was found cracked; that crack "led to a pressure loss in the propeller control system following a control system malfunction and led to an in‑flight engine shutdown." The fitting had originally been steel but was modified to aluminium by the engine manufacturer, and the investigation identified the area as "critical for cracks due to combination of mass, material and installation torque values." Diamond introduced a design change (MAM 42-184) in production to incorporate an additional bracket to "improve the installations and prevent vibration cracks." The AD extends that retrofit requirement to in‑service aeroplanes, stating explicitly that the requirement applies "for all airplanes, including the airplanes with steel fittings."
The AD also cross‑references other documents: it directs compliance with MSB 42-024/3 dated 19 September 2006 (or later NAA approved revisions), and its "Note" refers to "EASA Airworthiness Directive AD 2006-0277 dated 6 September 2006." Those references shape the technical method accepted by the authority for compliance.
