What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) concerning Diamond DA40 series aeroplanes. The AD (AD/DA40/8, 9/2008) identifies a specific hardware and assembly risk in the wing aileron and flap control systems and imposes mandatory hardware replacement and a prohibition. The operative requirements are twofold.
First, Requirement 1 mandates replacement of specified original-design bellcranks and any bent rod ends with improved-design parts, "in accordance with Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH MSB‑D4‑059 dated 14 February 2008 or MSB‑D4‑059/1 dated 31 March 2008 or later NAA approved revision." The parts and replacements are specified by part number: replace P/N DA4‑2717‑50‑00 aileron bellcrank with P/N DA4‑2717‑50‑00‑01; replace P/N DA4‑2757‑30‑00 flap bellcrank with P/N D60‑2757‑30‑00; replace any bent rod ends (P/N DAI‑9027‑00‑01) with straight parts. The AD ties the method of compliance to the manufacturer’s Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB).
Second, Requirement 2 is a prohibition: from the effective date of the AD, do not install the listed original-design bellcranks (P/N DA4‑2717‑50‑00 and P/N DA4‑2757‑30‑00) or any bent rod ends on the aircraft. The compliance schedule for Requirement 1 is explicit: "Within the next 200 flight hours after the effective date of this AD, unless previously accomplished." The AD’s effective date is stated as 28 August 2008. The AD also references EASA AD 2008‑0114 dated 12 June 2008.
The Background section describes the hazard driving these requirements. The original bellcrank design required slightly bent rod ends during production to avoid friction and possible chafing. That production workaround created a risk that replacement parts fitted in maintenance would be either unbent or bent incorrectly, which "could lead to chafing damage of the aileron or flap control system and consequent loss of control of the aircraft." Diamond developed improved bellcranks that allow additional angular movement of the push rod and remove the need for bent rod ends; the AD mandates adoption of those improved parts and forbids reinstallation of the older parts.
