Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory Airworthiness Directive (a legal safety notice) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for specific aircraft engines.

What it requires: Before installing any affected engine in an aircraft after maintenance, you must ensure the Power Turbine Wheel (a critical spinning component that drives the aircraft) meets specific safety standards outlined in General Electric Service Bulletin 72-127. Alternatively, you can comply using another directive called AD/GE-T/16.

Which engines are affected: All General Electric CT58 series engines with these model numbers:

CT5B-100-1 and CT5B-100-2
CT5B-110-2
CT5B-140-1 and CT5B-140-2

When it applies: The requirement kicks in before installation following the engine's next "light-overhaul" or "complete overhaul" (major maintenance checks) completed after 23 March 1970.

Why it matters: This prevents potentially dangerous power turbine wheel failures that could cause engine breakdown during flight.
