What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) labelled AD/CONVAIR/8, dated 5/2006, that mandates inspections and conditional replacement of specified nose landing gear (NLG) components on Convair Model 340 and Model 440 aeroplanes, including those converted to turbopropeller power. The Directive prescribes:
- which specific parts must be inspected (part numbers P/N 340-5210103, 5215103, or 340-7310231 for the NLG drag strut upper left hand segments) and the inspection area (the area depicted by Figure 1, view A-A, in General Dynamics Service Bulletin (SB) 640 (340D) No. 32-7 dated 20 June 1973) (Requirement 1);
- acceptable non‑destructive inspection (NDI) methods , dye penetrant, eddy current, or ultrasonic , and a note that disassembly of the strut is not required (Requirement 1);
- action on finding a crack , replacement of the drag strut with a new P/N 340-7310231-1 or with serviceable parts listed as items 1 through 4 in Convair Service Engineering Report No. 340-44A/440-44A dated 16 June 1961 (Requirement 2); and
- repetitive inspection intervals and the effect of replacement with a new part on the inspection obligation , using a new P/N 340-7310231-1 terminates the Directive’s inspection requirements; using a reworked part requires continuing inspections under the same schedule (Requirements 3 and 4).
The Compliance section sets numeric timing tied to aircraft landings: an initial inspection within 10 landings after 11 May 2006 unless already accomplished, a reinspection within 600 landings of the initial inspection unless already done, replacement "before further flight" if cracks are detected, and recurrent inspections at intervals not to exceed 2,400 landings. If a reworked part is installed, inspect within 600 landings after installation and thereafter at intervals not exceeding 2,400 landings. The Directive states it becomes effective on 11 May 2006 and references FAA AD 73-18-01 Amdt 39-1705 (note in Requirement section).
