What it does
This instrument is an Airworthiness Directive titled AD/CONVAIR/18, dated 5/2006, issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and effective 11 May 2006. It prescribes mandatory inspection, rework, finishing and replacement requirements for the nose landing gear (NLG) retract fork, Menasco part number 523526 R/L, installed on Convair Model 240, 340 and 440 series aeroplanes and any such models converted to turbopropeller power. The directive requires: (1) non‑destructive inspection for cracks in a specified radius area using dye penetrant or magnetic particle methods; (2) dimensional inspection of that radius to a specified tolerance (0.190 (+0, -.030)-inch radius); (3) hand rework where the radius measures below a specified minimum (any fork having less than 0.160-inch minimum radius must be hand reworked to the 0.190 (+0, -.030)-inch radius, taking care not to undercut the adjacent 1.2500/1.2495-inch diameter); (4) refinishing the reworked area in accordance with Convair Service Airgram No.179 dated 18 June 1956; (5) replacement of the complete fork assembly before further flight if cracks are detected in either half of the fork; and (6) termination of the repetitive inspection regime only when the fork assembly has been reworked to the specified radius, shot peened and refinished per Convair Service Airgram No.179. Compliance timing is prescribed: initial inspection within 800 hours time in service after 11 May 2006 unless the inspection was accomplished within the prior 200 hours time in service, and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 1,000 hours time in service. The directive explicitly notes a cross‑reference to FAA AD 64‑18‑04 Amdt 778 Part 507 and is signed by David Villiers, Delegate of CASA, dated 31 March 2006.
