What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), labelled AD/CONVAIR/12 and dated effective 11 May 2006, requires inspection and, where necessary, rework or replacement of the main landing gear piston/axle assemblies part number 528039 on specified Convair-type aircraft. The directive applies to Model 340 and 440 aeroplanes and to any such models converted to turbopropeller power, where the affected axle has accumulated 10,000 or more hours time in service (TIS). The inspection must look for cracks in the fillet radius area between the axle and the outboard face of both brake attachment flanges, using dye penetrant inspection procedures in accordance with Part I of General Dynamics (340D) Service Bulletin No.32-3 dated 31 October 1969, or by magnetic particle inspection procedure (Requirement 1).
If no cracks are detected, the inspection specified in Requirement 1 must be repeated at intervals not to exceed 1,000 hours TIS (Requirement 2). There is a termination path for the recurring 1,000 hour inspections: if the inspection area has been reworked in accordance with paragraphs C, D and E of Part II of SB 32-3, the 1,000 hour inspection interval may be terminated. Following such rework, after 2,000 hours TIS have accumulated, and before 2,500 hours TIS have accumulated since the rework, a Requirement 1 inspection must be performed; if that inspection shows no cracks, the Directive states that further inspections are not required by the Directive.
If cracks are detected at any inspection, the AD prescribes two alternative corrective paths. First, rework the cracked area per all provisions of Part II of SB 32-3 provided the axle wall thickness remaining after rework is at least 0.30 inches; after that rework, repeat the Requirement 1 inspection. Second, if the crack remediation would leave less than 0.30 inches wall thickness, the axle must be replaced. The AD includes a note referencing FAA AD 70-12-07 Amdt 39-1004. The AD was issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, signed by David Villiers as Delegate, dated 29 March 2006 (Background and signature block).
