What it does
This instrument is Civil Aviation Safety Authority Airworthiness Directive AD/CON/56 Amendment 2, Number 16/2021, addressing a specific structural integrity risk on Continental Motors (Continental Aerospace Technologies) Model TSIO-520BE piston engines. It applies only to engines with serial numbers 528001 through 528337 (Applicability). The directive mandates three discrete actions drawn from Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) Service Bulletin M89-14 (referred to in the AD as "in force on the commencement date of this AD"): (1) inspect the crankcase for end play in accordance with SB M89-14 Section A; (2) carry out a thru-bolt torque check in accordance with SB M89-14 Section B; and (3) inspect the number two crankcase main bearing in accordance with SB M89-14 Section C (Requirement). The AD fixes a commencement date of 20 August 2021 (Compliance: "This AD commences on 20 August 2021"), and is signed by David Punshon as a CASA delegate (signature block).
The AD sets short, mandatory compliance intervals. Requirement 1 (crankcase end play inspection) must be done before further flight after commencement and then at intervals not to exceed 25 hours time in service. Requirement 2 (thru-bolt torque check) must be done before further flight after commencement (a single pre-flight action unless already done). Requirement 3 (number two main bearing inspection) must be done before further flight after commencement and then at intervals not to exceed 200 hours time in service (Compliance). The AD incorporates two notes that change the operational burden: Note 1 allows the repetitive checks in Requirements 1 and 3 to be discontinued following disassembly of the crankcase assembly to a depth sufficient to inspect mating flanges for evidence of fretting and the installation of new bearings; Note 2 states that the FAA Airworthiness Directive 89-14-01 is the basis for this AD (Requirement, Notes, Background).
