What it does
This legislative instrument is an amendment to an existing Australian airworthiness directive (AD/CL-600/41) issued under the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations. It imposes mandatory actions on the operators of Bombardier Canadair CL-600-2B19 Regional Jet (RJ) aircraft within a specific serial number range: 7003 through 7067 and 7069 through 7545 inclusive. The directive addresses a known safety issue: false fire warnings from engines and auxiliary power units caused by liquid ingress into the fire and overheat control unit (part number 472597-01) located in the flight compartment. The original directive (effective 21 February 2001) required the installation of protective tape over the unit’s fasteners and hinge to prevent fluid contamination. This amendment adds two further layers: repeat inspections of that tape every 5,000 hours time in service or at the next “C” check (whichever is later), with mandatory replacement of any tape found not to be making a satisfactory seal. It also introduces a terminating action: the removal of the original unit and its replacement with part number 472597-02, in accordance with Bombardier Service Bulletin 601R-26-018 or its Revision A, within 20,000 hours time in service after the amendment’s effective date or before 31 December 2010, whichever occurs first. Once the replacement unit is installed, no further inspections under this directive are required for that aircraft. The amendment becomes effective on 29 June 2007. Later revisions of the referenced service bulletins may be used for compliance, but only if they are approved by the Chief, Continuing Airworthiness, Aircraft Certification, Transport Canada. The instrument is signed by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
