Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This directive mandates safety inspections for specific Bombardier Challenger aircraft (serial numbers 1005–1008 and 1010 onwards). What it does: Requires inspection of the elevator inboard hinge fittings (part numbers 600-23045-1 and -2) — these are the pivot points that allow the elevator (the moving surface controlling the aircraft's up/down pitch) to work. Timeline: First inspection must happen within 300 flight hours after 31 March 1983, then repeated every 150 flight hours until the part is replaced. Critical requirement: If inspectors find any cracks, the fitting must be replaced with a stronger steel version before the aircraft can fly again. Why it matters: The original aluminum fittings have a suspected structural weakness that could compromise flight safety. This rule ensures potentially defective parts are identified and replaced with safer steel alternatives.
