What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/CL-600/114) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 19 June 2009 and effective 30 July 2009 mandates corrective actions for the landing gear alternate extension system (AES) on certain Bombardier Inc. models. Specifically, it applies to CL-600-2C10 (Regional Jet Series 700 and 701) serial numbers 10003 through 10216 and CL-600-2D15 (Regional Jet Series 705) and CL-600-2D24 (Regional Jet Series 900) serial numbers 15001 through 15039. The directive has three core requirements. First, replace the existing clevis on the bypass valve (part number 53342-3) with a new clevis part number 2323H037. Second, replace the existing clevis on the downlock assist valve (part number 53341-5) with the same new clevis. Third, install new support brackets for both the bypass and downlock assist valves. These actions must be performed in accordance with Alert Service Bulletin (ASB) A670BA-32-022, Revision A, dated 1 May 2009, or later revisions approved by the Chief, Continuing Airworthiness, Transport Canada. For requirements 1 and 2, the original issue of ASB A670BA-32-022 dated 8 November 2007 is also accepted. For requirement 3, only Revision A or later approved revisions are accepted. The compliance deadlines differ depending on the flight cycles (FC) or flight hours (FH) accumulated on each valve as at the effective date. For the bypass and downlock assist valves with 9,400 FC or less, the clevis must be replaced before the valve reaches 10,000 FC. For valves with more than 9,400 FC or if the cycles cannot be determined, replacement must occur within 550 FH after the effective date. The support brackets must be installed within 4,500 FH after the effective date, or 6,000 FH after requirement 1, or 6,000 FC after requirement 2, whichever comes first. The background explains that pressurization and depressurization cycles cause deflection of the pressure floor in the main landing gear bay, creating relative misalignment that can damage and potentially fail the clevis. A clevis failure could remain dormant such that if the AES is required, full landing gear extension may not be achievable. This AD gives instructions to replace the clevis with a new part for both valves and to install new support brackets to increase installation stiffness and prevent future relative misalignment and potential clevis failure.
