What it does
This document is an Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) titled AD/CIRRUS/5 Fuel Line Chafing Damage, effective 11 May 2006. It prescribes three required actions for specified Cirrus Design SR20 and SR22 series aeroplanes by serial number. The Directive requires operators to inspect the fuel line and adjacent wire harness for chafing in accordance with Cirrus Design Corporation Service Bulletin SB 2X-28-04 R1 (Issued 1 November 2005, Revised 14 November 2005), to correct any chafing damage found, and to install specified anti-chafe hardware. The AD explicitly accepts later revisions of that Service Bulletin if those later revisions are approved by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMOC) to FAA AD 2006-07-06 (Amdt 39-14533). The AD states compliance times: Requirement 1 and Requirement 3 must be complied with within the next 50 hours time-in-service (TIS) after the Directive’s effective date; Requirement 2 must be addressed before further flight following the Requirement 1 inspection. The AD sets out the serial-number applicability ranges: SR20 serial numbers 1005 through 1581 inclusive, and SR22 serial numbers 0002 through 1643 and 1645 through 1662. The background provided states the FAA received reports of fuel line leaks caused by wire chafing, which could lead to unsafe fuel vapour in the cockpit and possible fire. The Directive’s stated intention is to detect, correct and prevent fuel line and wire-bundle damage that could result in fuel leaks. The AD is signed by James Coyne as Delegate of CASA on 20 April 2006.
