What it does
This Civil Aviation Safety Authority airworthiness directive (AD/CFM56/9 Amdt 1, effective 6 July 2006) mandates eddy‑current inspections of specified high‑pressure turbine rotor (HPTR) fan discs used in a defined subset of CFM International CFM56 engine variants, and removal from service of any discs found to be cracked or gouged (Requirement; Applicability; Compliance). The AD lists the precise part numbers of HPTR discs to be inspected (1475M29P01, 1475M29P02, 9514M69P01, 9514M69P04, 9514M69P05, 9514M69P06 and 9514M69P09) and confines applicability to HPTR discs installed in CFM56‑2, ‑2A, ‑2B, ‑3, ‑3B and ‑3C engines (Applicability; Requirement).
The inspections must be performed “in accordance with” the CFMI Service Bulletins (SBs) specified for each engine family. The AD cites different SBs and revision/dates depending on the engine variant:
- CFM56‑2 engines: CFM56‑2 SB No. 72‑817 dated 14 January 1997;
- CFM56‑2A engines: CFM56‑2A SB No. 72‑419, Revision 1, dated 31 January 1997;
- CFM56‑2B engines: CFM56‑2B SB No. 72‑561, Revision 1, dated 31 January 1997;
- CFM56‑3, ‑3B, ‑3C engines: CFM56‑3/‑3B/‑3C SB No. 72‑843 dated 14 January 1997 (Requirement).
Compliance timing is strict: inspections must be completed within 30 days after the AD’s effective date unless already done (Compliance). The AD was issued in response to a shop discovery of a crack in a rim bolt hole of an HPTR disc that investigation attributed to a manufacturing drill break that produced a gouge in the bolt hole (Background). The AD therefore targets discs and bolthole areas vulnerable to crack initiation from gouges and requires non‑serviceable disposition for any disc with crack or gouge (Requirement; Background).
The amendment corrects a typographical error in a part number that previously risked omission of discs from the inspection requirement (Amendment note). The AD also explicitly references DGAC AD 97‑327(B) (Requirement, Note). The document is signed by a CASA delegate (James Coyne) and dated 24 May 2006 (signature block).
