What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD/CFM56/27, dated 11/2007 DM) imposes mandatory low cycle fatigue (LCF) life-limit controls and an inspection/removal pathway for specified low pressure turbine (LPT) rear frames fitted to certain CFM56-5B series turbofan engines. The instrument identifies affected engine models and specific LPT rear frame part numbers, requires operators to adopt the LCF life limits published in the CFM56-5B Engine Shop Manual (ESM) revision 47 (dated 15 January 2007) or a later approved revision, and prescribes remedial action where the number of cycles since new for an affected LPT rear frame cannot be established.
Mechanically, the AD does three things:
- It defines applicability by engine model and by LPT rear frame P/N. The listed engine models are CFM56-5B1/P, -5B2/P, -5B3/P, -5B3/P1, -5B4/P, -5B4/P1, -5B5/P, -5B6/P, -5B7/P, -5B8/P and -5B9/P in commercial application, and CFM56-5B6/P and -5B7/P in corporate application (conversion per SB 72-0308), but only when the LPT rear frame P/N is 338-171-703-0, 338-171-704-0, 338-171-705-0 or 338-171-706-0 (see "Applicability" in the AD).
- It directs operators to "comply with the LCF life limits" in chapters 05-12-04, 05-12-24 and 05-21-03 of the CFM56-5B ESM, revision 47, or a later approved revision (Requirement 1).
- It prescribes a contingent action where the number of cycles since new cannot be established: remove and replace the LPT rear frame, or perform the inspections specified in CFM56-5B Service Bulletin S/B 72-0620 initial issue, or a later approved revision (Requirement 2).
The AD sets two short compliance timeframes: one action must be taken "within 7 days after the effective date of this AD, unless previously accomplished" and the other within "300 cycles after the effective date of this AD" (Compliance). The AD became effective on 3 September 2007 and the instrument is signed by the CASA delegate on 28 August 2007. The text also cross-references EASA AD 2007-0221 dated 13 August 2007 and explains that the LCF life limits were introduced by a CFM56-5B ESM Temporary Revision TR 05-0145 and integrated into ESM revision 47.
