What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), designated AD/CF6/67 and effective 22 November 2007, mandates enhanced inspection requirements for compressor rear frames (CRFs) on specific General Electric CF6-80E1 model turbofan engines. The directive covers five engine models: CF6-80E1A1, CF6-80E1A2, CF6-80E1A3, CF6-80E1A4, and CF6-80E1A4/B, but only those units with CRF part numbers 1520M26G03, G06, G08, G11, or G12. The core requirement is to revise the Instructions for Continued Airworthiness ALS and, for air carrier operations, the approved continuous airworthiness maintenance program, by adding three specific elements: a compliance schedule (Table 1); module-level inspection procedures; and piece-part level inspection procedures. The AD also requires operators to determine the cycles-since-new (CSN) of the affected CRFs.
The compliance schedule in Table 1 is structured by engine rating. Engines operated at the higher CF6-80E1A3 or CF6-80E1A4/B ratings must have an initial inspection before 12,200 CSN, with repetitive inspections every 6,300 cycles-since-last-inspection (CSLI), except igniter pad holes on P/Ns 1520M26G03/G06/G08 must be inspected every 4,800 CSLI. Engines at the CF6-80E1A4 rating require initial inspection before 13,700 CSN and repetitive inspections every 6,300 CSLI, but with a tighter 6,100 CSLI interval for those igniter pad holes on the earlier part numbers. Engines at the lower CF6-80E1A1 or CF6-80E1A2 ratings get the longest initial interval (before 14,200 CSN) and a uniform repetitive interval of 6,300 CSLI.
The module-level inspection requires eddy current inspection (ECI) of locations 3 through 8 on all affected CRFs, plus fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) of locations 1 and 2 on CRFs with P/Ns 1520M26G03/G06/G08. Piece-part level inspection (which requires removal and disassembly of the CRF) substitutes FPI for ECI at locations 3 through 8 for all affected frames. The stated purpose, as per the Background note, is to detect cracks that could lead to CRF rupture and an under-cowl engine fire. The AD references specific sections of the CF6-80E1 Engine Manual (GEK 99376) for the exact inspection points and techniques.
