What it does
This instrument is an airworthiness directive (AD) addressed to a defined set of Cessna 400‑series aeroplanes. It prescribes mandatory visual inspections of the auxiliary wing spar in the area where the main landing gear trunnion is mounted, repetition and action thresholds for detected cracking, replacement deadlines for cracked parts, and a reporting requirement to the manufacturer. The AD specifies the inspection method to be "in accordance with Cessna Service Bulletin MEB08‑8 original issue, or later FAA approved revision" and establishes initial and follow‑up compliance timing. The AD becomes effective on 2 March 2009 and is dated 23 February 2009, signed by a Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
Mechanically, the AD does the following (text items reproduced from the source):
- Identifies the exact applicability by model and serial number ranges (see the Applicability table).
- Requires a visual inspection of the auxiliary wing spar near the main landing gear trunnion for cracks, "in accordance with Cessna Service Bulletin MEB08‑8 original issue, or later FAA approved revision" (Requirement).
- Provides discrete action thresholds: any detected crack of 0.5‑inch or more must be replaced before further flight; cracks under 0.5‑inch must be monitored at intervals not to exceed 50 hours time in service and replaced if they reach 0.50‑inch, and in any event replaced within 200 hours time in service or 12 months after the original detection, whichever occurs first (Requirement).
- Imposes an initial inspection timing: "Accomplish the initial inspection within 10 hours time in service after 2 March 2009, unless already accomplished; and, in addition, before further flight anytime the aircraft experiences a hard landing." (Compliance)
