Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This is a safety rule for owners of specific Cessna 337 aircraft (twin-engine planes with front and rear propellers). It applies only to planes with serial numbers before 33701463.

The rule fixes a dangerous design flaw: the metal channel holding the battery lid could touch the battery's positive terminal, causing electric sparks (arcing). These sparks can burn holes in the nearby landing gear hydraulic lines, which could lead to hydraulic system failure.

What aircraft owners must do:

Inspect the hydraulic lines near the battery for burn marks or damage caused by electric sparks. Replace any damaged lines.
Protect the battery lid channel by wrapping it with electrical insulation (such as nylex sheathing).
Cover the battery cable ends with protective rubber caps (part number MS25171-35 or similar).

Owners had to complete these steps within 100 flight hours after 30 September 1977.
