What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) mandates a specific inspection and, for certain aircraft, a placarding action concerning the alternate static air source selector valve on Cessna 336 model aeroplanes. The AD applies to aeroplanes that were originally delivered from the manufacturer between 1 January 1993 and 31 March 2008, or that have had a replacement alternat static air source selector valve with part number (P/N) 2013142-18 installed at any time after 1 January 1993. The core mechanical requirement is to ensure that the part number identification placard attached to the valve body does not obstruct the port of the valve. The AD creates a two‑track compliance regime depending on whether the aeroplane is equipped for flight under instrument flight rules (IFR).
For non‑IFR aeroplanes (Requirement 1), the operator must inspect the valve within the next 100 hours time‑in‑service (TIS) or within four months of the effective date, whichever occurs first, to confirm that the placard is not obstructing the port.
For IFR‑equipped aeroplanes, the AD offers two alternative paths. Under Requirement 2a, the operator must inspect the valve within ten days of the effective date to assure that the placard is not obstructing the port. Under Requirement 2b, before further flight after the effective date, the operator must fabricate and install on the instrument panel a placard that states “IFR OPERATION IS PROHIBITED” and “USE OF THE ALTERNATE STATIC AIR SOURCE IS PROHIBITED.” The letters must be at least 1/8 inch high. After that placard is installed, Requirement 3 then obliges the operator to still perform an inspection of the valve within the next 100 hours TIS or four months after the effective date, whichever occurs first. Following that inspection, the placards installed under Requirement 2b must be removed before further flight. This sequence indicates that the placard under 2b is a temporary risk‑mitigation measure pending a physical inspection that can verify the port’s condition.
