Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

What this is: An Airworthiness Directive—a mandatory safety order issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (or its predecessor) requiring specific maintenance actions to keep aircraft airworthy.

What it requires: Owners and operators must install an exhaust tailpipe support kit on affected aircraft. This involves fitting a support bracket to prevent the exhaust pipe from vibrating loose, cracking, or failing due to engine heat and stress.

Who it affects: Only turbocharged Cessna 320 aircraft with serial numbers from 320D0001 to 320F0045 (covering the D, E, and F model variants).

Why it matters: Without this support, the exhaust tailpipe could fracture in flight. This creates serious risks: carbon monoxide (a deadly gas) could leak into the cabin and incapacitate the crew, or hot exhaust could damage surrounding aircraft structure.

Compliance: The modification had to be completed before 1 January 1976, following the technical instructions in Cessna Service Letter ME75-17.
