What it does
This Airworthiness Directive (AD), designated AD/CESSNA 208/22 and issued by the delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on 6 May 2008, imposes mandatory inspection and corrective action on Cessna 208 and 208B series aeroplanes. It addresses a manufacturing defect in the alternate static air source selector valve, part number (P/N) 2013142-18. The defect is that the part number identification placard has been improperly installed on the valve body in a location that covers the port which supplies the static air reference into the valve. If the placard obstructs that port, the static pressure reference is blocked, causing the altimeter, airspeed indicator and vertical speed indicator to display erroneous readings. The AD was prompted by reports to the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and a quality control discovery at Cessna; Cessna had corrected stock, but the manufacturer could not verify how many defective assemblies had already been shipped to the field.
Mechanically, the AD creates two compliance paths depending on whether the affected aeroplane had the valve installed at manufacture (Table 1) or could have had it fitted as a replacement part or from spares (Table 2). For Table 1 aeroplanes (specific serial numbers: 20800417-20800419 and 208B1294-208B1310), the operator must physically inspect the valve before further flight after the effective date of 13 May 2008. The inspection requires adjusting the pilot and co-pilot seats fully aft and using a flashlight and mirror to check that the port on the forward end of the valve is clearly visible and not covered by the placard. For Table 2 aeroplanes (a much broader range: 20800001-20800416 and 208B0001-208B1293), the operator has an alternative: either perform the physical inspection or check the aeroplane’s maintenance records to determine whether the valve has been replaced with P/N 2013142-18 after 19 November 2007. If the records show no replacement, no further action is needed. If the record check indicates a replacement occurred, the physical inspection must then be performed. For both tables, if during the inspection the placard is found obstructing the port, the placard must be removed from the valve body, discarded, and the port confirmed open and unobstructed. Additionally, any P/N 2013142-18 valve installed as a modification or replacement part on or after the effective date must be inspected for placard obstruction prior to installation.
