What it does
AD/CESSNA 206/47 Amdt 3 is an Australian airworthiness directive issued by a delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). It imposes mandatory actions on the rear cargo door emergency exit of certain Cessna 206 series aeroplanes. The directive addresses a known problem: during an emergency, the cargo door has been difficult to open with the flaps down, impeding evacuation. The directive compels operators to either replace or modify existing placards, paint latch lever recesses, and, in some cases, modify the door mechanism itself.
The directive applies to three groups of serial numbers, each with distinct requirements. For serial numbers 206-0001 through U206-04649, the operator must remove the existing cargo door “Emergency Exit Operation” placard, paint the aft cargo door latch lever recess white (or otherwise highlight it), and install a new placard on the forward pillar of the aft door, centred about 150 mm above the window sill line. The placard must bear specified text in four steps, with the words “RESTOW RED LEVER” and “FORCE” at least 40 per cent larger than the other lettering. The lettering must be white on a red background or black on a yellow background, minimum 3.5 mm high. As an alternative, the operator may modify the cargo door in accordance with Cessna Service Bulletin SEB 91-4.
For serial numbers U20604650 through U20607020, the placard text is different. It adds an initial step: “ROTATE FORWARD CARGO DOOR HANDLE FULL FORWARD THEN FULL AFT.” This reflects a different door mechanism installed during production. The same options for modification via SEB 91-4 apply.
For serial numbers 20608001 and onwards, and T20608001 and onwards, the requirement is an inspection only. The operator must check the existing placard against the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) Limitation Section. If the placard does not match the AFM for that serial number, it must be removed and replaced with the correct placard. If it matches, no further action is needed.
