Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) issued by Australia’s aviation safety regulator for Cessna 205 aircraft.

What it requires: Owners and operators must inspect the nose wheel steering mechanism (specifically the ‘steering collar assembly’) for cracks and distortion using a special crack-detection dye (penetrant inspection method).

Why it matters: Rough landings on uneven airstrips and improper maintenance can damage this part. If the steering collar fails, the pilot could lose directional control on the ground, potentially causing a runway accident.

Who must comply: Anyone operating a Cessna 205 series aircraft (also designated model 210-5).

When to do it:

First inspection: within 100 flight hours after 31 January 1975
Repeat inspection: every 100 flight hours thereafter

This is a recurring maintenance requirement, not a one-off fix.
