Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does

This is a mandatory safety order (an Airworthiness Directive) requiring owners of specific Cessna 185 aircraft to inspect and fix a potentially dangerous defect in the flight control system.

Who it affects

Owners and operators of Cessna 185 aeroplanes with serial numbers between 18503252 and 18503907.

What must be done

Inspect the brass turnbuckles (adjustable connectors that tension the control cables) in the flying control system for longitudinal cracks
Carry out the specific repair or replacement actions detailed in Cessna Service Information Letter SE 80-16
Complete this work within 100 hours of flight time after 30 April 1980

Why it matters

Some brass turnbuckles (identified as part number AN 155) can develop cracks radiating from the ends. If these components fail, the pilot could lose control of the aircraft. This directive ensures the defective parts are identified and replaced before they cause an accident.
