Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

This is a mandatory safety order (called an Airworthiness Directive) that requires owners of specific Cessna aircraft to fix a defect in the fuel vent tube — the pipe that allows air to enter the fuel tank as fuel is consumed.

Who it affects:

Owners and operators of Cessna 185 model aircraft with serial numbers between 18503154 and 18503524

What must be done:

Inspect and repair the fuel vent tube following the exact instructions in Cessna Service Letter No. SE78-40 (a technical bulletin from the plane's manufacturer)

Deadline:

Complete the work within 100 hours of flight time after 30 September 1978

Why it matters: Damaged or blocked fuel vent tubes can cause fuel leaks, fuel starvation, or fire hazards during flight.
