Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What this does: This Airworthiness Directive (a mandatory aviation safety rule) requires owners and operators of specific light aircraft to upgrade their front seat safety equipment.

Who it affects: Anyone who owns or operates Cessna 180, Cessna 182, or Wren 460 series aeroplanes.

What must be done: The existing front seat restraints (seatbelts) must be modified to install safety harnesses (which include shoulder straps for better protection). This work must follow a specific plan approved by the Secretary (the senior government aviation official).

Why it matters: This safety upgrade protects pilots and front passengers from serious injury during turbulence, hard landings, or crashes by preventing the upper body from striking the controls or windshield. The modification had to be completed before 1 September 1972.
