Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This directive mandates safety inspections for specific light aircraft models (Cessna 180, 182, and Wren 460 series). What it requires: Aircraft owners must regularly inspect the rivets attaching the balance weights to the ailerons (the hinged control surfaces on the wings). Mechanics must check for corrosion under the rivet heads—if corrosion is suspected, they must remove the rivet heads with a sharp sideways blow from a screwdriver and replace any damaged or corroded rivets. Who it affects: Owners and operators of these specific aircraft types. Why it matters: Corroded rivets could cause the aileron mass balance weights to detach during flight, potentially causing dangerous vibrations or loss of control. Compliance: The first inspection must occur within 100 flight hours after 29 September 1972, then repeated every 100 flight hours of operation.
