What it does
This instrument is an Australian airworthiness directive published in the Schedule of Airworthiness Directives under the Civil Aviation Regulations 1998, Part 39 (header: "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA (Civil Aviation Regulations 1998), PART 39 - 105 CIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AUTHORITY SCHEDULE OF AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVES"). Its identifier is AD/CESSNA 170/50 Aileron Hinge Pin 1/84. The directive imposes a mandatory requirement for specified Cessna 170/172/175-series aeroplanes to have corrective or inspection action carried out "in accordance with Cessna S.I.L. SE83-18" (the directive’s Requirement line). The AD is narrowly framed by an Applicability block listing precise models and specific serial-number ranges.
Mechanically the AD does three things, as stated in the source text:
- It identifies the affected fleet precisely by model and serial-number ranges (the Applicability table).
- It prescribes the remedial or inspection action by reference to a manufacturer document, "Cessna S.I.L. SE83-18" (Requirement).
- It sets a compliance trigger and deadline in time terms relative to 31 January 1984: compliance must be met "unless already accomplished within 100 hours time in service after 31 January 1984 or at the next scheduled inspection for Maintenance Release issue after 31 January 1984, whichever is the later" (Compliance).
The AD also contains a short technical background: "Possible migration and loss of the aileron hinge pin could result if the retaining split pin holes are incorrectly located" (Background). A cross-reference to an FAA action is recorded as "Note: FAA AD 83-22-06 refers." The AD directs action to be taken; it does not include the detailed procedural steps itself, but instead delegates the technical detail to the Cessna Service Instruction Letter (S.I.L.) SE83-18.
