Plain English Summary

2/10 complexity

What it does: This Airworthiness Directive (AD) requires regular safety inspections of plastic control wheels (the "yokes" that pilots hold) on certain Cessna aircraft to prevent in-flight failures.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of Cessna 172 and 175 series aircraft that are fitted with plastic control wheels.

What you must do:

Follow the instructions in Cessna Service Letter No. 62-44 every 100 hours of flight time (time in service)
Follow the instructions in Cessna Service Letter No. 64-8 every 500 hours of flight time, but only counting hours flown after 1 September 1971

Why it matters: Plastic control wheels can crack or degrade with age and use. Without these regular checks, the wheel could break during flight, causing loss of control of the aircraft.
