What it does
This Airworthiness Directive, AD/CASA/29 Pitot Static Tubes (11/2008 DM), requires inspection and conditional replacement of specific pitot/static tubes installed on certain EADS-CASA C-212 series aeroplanes. Mechanically, the Directive imposes two mandatory operational actions on affected aircraft operators and maintenance organisations.
First, Requirement 1 requires a detailed inspection of the affected pitot/static tubes for radial cracking around the top lip of the dynamic port, carried out in accordance with EADS-CASA C-212 Maintenance Manual, Chapter 5, Revision 5, June 2002 (Requirement 1). Second, Requirement 2 requires replacement of any tube in which cracks are found with a new pitot tube P/N 212-A0150-0001 or 212-A0150-0002, in accordance with the instructions of EADS-CASA Service Bulletin SB 212-34-11 Revision 1 (Requirement 2). The Directive expressly allows the use of later revisions of the referenced Maintenance Manual or Service Bulletin if they are approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) (see end of Requirement 2 paragraph).
The Directive specifies a compliance schedule. For the inspection task (Requirement 1), the first inspection must be completed within one calendar month or 300 hours time in service (TIS), whichever occurs first after the Directive’s effective date; thereafter inspections must be repeated at intervals not to exceed 300 hours TIS. For the replacement task (Requirement 2), any pitot tube found cracked must be replaced before the next flight following the inspection in which the crack was discovered (Compliance). The Directive became effective on 15 September 2008 and is signed by the Delegate of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (Charles Lenarcic), dated 8 September 2008.
The Directive applies to Model C-212-CB, C-212-CC, C-212-CD, C-212-CE, C-212-CF, C-212-DE and C-212-VA aircraft, all serial numbers, but only when pitot tube part number 212-61105.1 or 212-61105.2 is installed (Applicability). The Directive notes that some model types included have no known civil-registered examples in service but are covered regardless (Note 1). The Directive references related European action, noting EASA AD 2008-0155 (Note 2).
