Plain English Summary

1/10 complexity

This Airworthiness Directive (AD) is a mandatory safety order issued to aircraft owners and operators.

What it does: It requires immediate inspection and removal of counterfeit (bogus) main rotor grips — a critical component that attaches the rotor blades to the helicopter. Operators must follow the specific inspection and replacement procedures outlined in Bell Alert Service Bulletin 47-89-15 Rev A.

Who it affects: This applies to owners and operators of specific Bell 47 helicopter models: 47G2, 47G2A, 47G2A1, 47G3, 47G3B1, 47G3B2, 47G3B2A, 47G4, 47G4A, 47G5, 47G5A, 47J, 47J2, and 47J2A.

The deadline: The required action must be completed before the aircraft flies again after 1 November 1989.

Why it matters: The parts in question were manufactured without approval from Bell Helicopter or the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Unapproved parts may not meet safety standards and could fail in flight, posing a catastrophic risk to the aircraft and occupants.
