Plain English Summary

3/10 complexity

What this is: An Airworthiness Directive (a mandatory safety order) issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority requiring replacement of faulty bearings in certain helicopters.

Who it affects: Owners and operators of specific Bell 47 helicopter models—including variants 47G-2, 47G-3, 47G-4, 47G-5, and 47J series—that have not already been modified according to Bell Alert Service Bulletin 47-80-6 or Kawasaki-Bell Service Bulletin KSB-Bell 353.

What you must do: Install improved bearings in the tail rotor drive and fan drive systems (located within the main gearbox) before the next 600-hourly inspection occurring after 30 October 1980.

Why it matters: The original bearings were prone to failure, which could cause loss of tail rotor control or cooling fan function, potentially leading to catastrophic accidents. This amendment expands the safety requirement to cover helicopters manufactured by Kawasaki-Bell in addition to those made by Bell Helicopter Textron.
